If You Like MGMT…

I’ve been a fan of MGMT for a while now, with their three songs, Time to Pretend, Electric Feel, and Kids each taking a turn as my favourite song of the moment. Unfortunately, when the band started to blow up in popularity and people I would have never expected were asking, “Do you like MGMT?”, and changing their ringtones and all in all obsessing, I stopped, or at least toned down my listening to them, like only a pretentious indie rock fan could. Now I am no pretentious indie fan, far from it. Hell, I even like mainstream country. But for some reason I ignored them on my ipod in favour of other bands, bands I believe deserve as much credit and fame, and I only listened to MGMT when I heard them on the radio or when an acquaintance’s phone busted out Kids. Today, after hearing them on an old playlist, I gave in and listened to the whole album. To be honest I wasn’t as impressed as I thought I would be; given the fact that when they come to town they’ll probably sell out GM Place. Their three singles were great songs, and there are probably at least two more on the album, but not all the songs surpass the average rock song.

The point I want to make here is that there is a lot of talent in this world. There are a lot of other bands writing songs that are just as great, and we shouldn’t turn a blind eye to them because we’re caught up in the great band of the moment. If we do we might miss our next favourite song, or our next summer anthem, or we might miss the one song that says exactly what we need to hear or exactly what we’re thinking so that we know we’re not alone.

So if you like MGMT, chances are you’ll like some other sweet music too. Check the links and posts to come for more great bands and songs that are worth more than a listen.
